Award-winning Thai film The Maestro: Symphony of Terror premieres February 3

Somtow Sucharitkul and director Paul Spurrier created project to get young musicians and film crews working on the indie Thai film

Bangkok, 28 January 2022—Somtow Sucharitkul and his well-known youth orchestra, Siam Sinfonietta, got together with film director Paul Spurrier during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and put the time to very good use. Instead of griping about the lack of creative outlets available for musicians and the film industry, they dreamed up a project to get the orchestra back into rehearsal and film crews back on the job with the award-winning indie Thai film – The Maestro: Symphony of Terror.

The film features Siam Sinfonietta plus numerous veteran Thai actors including Vithaya Parnsringarm, Sahajak Boonthanakit, Michael Shaowanasai, David Asavanond with ‘Maestro’ Somtow playing the crazed conductor himself. The plot thickens when he abducts a youth orchestra and creates a classical music dystopia in an abandoned mansion, something director Paul Spurrier made a point to capture in the interest of the world community.

After completing the film several months ago, it opened the Oldenburg Festival in Germany, where it won the Spirit of Cinema Award — an accolade soon followed by seven more awards from other festivals around the world. Additional honors include the Thai International Film Festival (Best Creative Vision), Ediplay in France (Best Original Music), three awards from Multi-Dimension Festival in the UK (Best Feature Film, Best Music Score, Best Composer), Beyond the Curve Festival in Paris (Best Horror) and Outstanding Achievement in Science Fiction and Genre from Singapore World Film Carnival. All told The Maestro: Symphony of Terror was an official selection of eighteen international film festivals on four continents.

The Siam Sinfonietta Orchestra was invited to perform at the film’s opening in Oldenburg last year — the first time a major international film festival opened with a full symphony orchestra. The reception was very heartwarming and was followed up with a gratifying invite back to Germany next year.

Thai fans of Spurrier’s horror films (The Forest, Eullenia), and Somtow’s portfolio of work (in opera, film and as a writer) will finally get a chance to see The Maestro: Symphony of Terror when the official limited release opens at SF World Cinema in Central World on February 3.
