Cardinal Health investing in new Protexis™ surgical gloves manufacturing facility in Thailand
Bangkok, Thailand – SEPTEMBER 29, 2022 — Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH) recently announced plans to build a second state-of-the art surgical glove manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand with a ceremonial blessing and groundbreaking event at the new site location. The new facility, which will be 720,000 square feet in its initial phase, will expand Cardinal Health’s surgical glove manufacturing footprint in Rayong to more than 1.3 million square feet of manufacturing space. The new facility will also increase employment opportunities for skilled manufacturing workers in the Rayong region.
With over 50 years of surgical glove experience, Cardinal Health is a global leader in surgical glove innovation and production. The Protexis™ surgical glove portfolio is recognized around the world for its ability to protect and perform while meeting the specific needs of health care professionals in different settings.
As the demand for surgical gloves continues to grow, mainly attributed to increased surgical volumes worldwide, international adoption of synthetic surgical gloves to support skin health, and the adoption of double gloving and glove changing practices, Cardinal Health’s manufacturing investment in Rayong will help support current and future state customer inventory needs for its Protexis™ surgical glove portfolio.
Cardinal Health currently operates a 600,000 square foot surgical glove facility in Rayong. The site has been undergoing several process improvements to increase surgical glove capacity, reaching a recent major manufacturing milestone of 500 million pairs of gloves produced in a year. Further site expansion projects are underway to accommodate additional equipment, which will boost production by an incremental 100 million pairs of gloves over the next three years.
“We’re investing in surgical glove manufacturing, both at our current Rayong facility and with our new facility, to ensure we are meeting the inventory needs of our customers on a global scale,” said Tony Johnson, president of Global Products and Supply Chain at Cardinal Health. “Our investment in surgical glove manufacturing is critical to positioning Protexis™ surgical gloves on its growth trajectory”, said Johnson.
The addition of a second manufacturing plant in Rayong will allow for increased operational efficiencies across the two locations, more localized access to raw materials necessary for production, and shared resource expertise and capabilities. The plant will also enhance its surgical glove Research and Development efforts, and boost Rayong’s role as a Center of Excellence for skilled worker learning and development in Thailand.
