Faisal Malik Searches All Corners of Thailand for Rare Wood

He takes pride in creating unique furniture that harmoniously unites wood’s innate beauty

Bangkok, 25 August 2020 – Faisal Malik is a furniture maker creating pieces that are simultaneously functional and art. Crafted from stunningly beautiful and rare woods each piece has its own story and history.

The majority of his work focuses on creating bespoke tables, but he also creates smaller objects such as boxes, mirrors and vases.

Take Faisal’s ‘Quilted Patchwork Live Edge Dining Table’ for example. It uses an exceedingly rare and wide single slab of reclaimed ‘Makha’ wood. This slab, taken from a naturally fallen tree which died from old age and disease, estimated to be between 200 to 250 years old, was purchased directly from a Thai family home in northern Thailand.

Part of the same family for three generations this was the largest slab in their collection. Quilted inlays were added for strengthening and repairing sections of the slab that had decayed.  Alternating the direction and angle, the wood inlays are cut, and their grain allows for a holographic effect reminiscent of a precious jewel. Three solid brass butterflies placed throughout the top cover up the original nail holes. The legs are made by a team who normally build structural components for skyscrapers and are cut from solid billets of stainless steel with a bespoke mounting system.

“I make every single piece myself and pour my heart and soul into it. I keep refining my skills and always strive for improvement at all levels, from design, to engineering the joinery, to the finishing,” Faisal, said.

Nothing brings him more pleasure than sharing his art with others, he finds joy in creating unique pieces for homes around the world.

“It is always thrilling for me to work with new ideas and design inspiration that challenge and prove rewarding in so many ways,” he added.
