In the new group art exhibition “A Monk, a Child, an Art, a Philosopher, a Weevil,” viewers are invited to experience the myriad stories and rich culture of Suphanburi

The 1984 + 1 Gallery in Suphanburi is proud to present a new group art exhibit, titled “A Monk, a Child, an Art, a Philosopher, a Weevil”, now open and running until 1 September 2024.

A Monk, a Child, an Art, a Philosopher, a Weevil,” invites visitors to explore the fascinating stories of historic Suphanburi, presented via the viewpoints of 10 Thai artists, many who are local to Suphanburi province. Presented inside the dramatic expanse of the 1984 + 1 Gallery, the exhibition features narratives interwoven through various dimensions of time and place, subtly embedded within the fabric of culture, community, environment, and human relationships.

Curated by fellow artist and Suphanburi native Preecha Raksorn, the exhibit features new works from a group of artists working across a variety of mediums. Several of the many highlights include:

  • Benjarong (Thai porcelain) by Putsadee Sriamphunpluk, who experiments with new design techniques in jewelry
  • Digital photography by Chalit Saphaphak, whose “Last Round” chronicles the cancer treatment of his father
  • Pastels on woven bags by Thanawat Numcharoen, whose work narrates the long journey of the elephant, and in doing so explores the geographical relationships across borders
  • Eternal Game by Pachara Piyasongsoot, an interactive installation related to the artist’s painting Eternal Wall, a story of workers who sweep the streets in a housing estate

The artists participating in “A Monk, a Child, an Art, a Philosopher, a Weevil” are:

Krittaporn Mahaweerarat

Kwanchai Lichaikul

Chalit Saphaphak

Trinnapat Chaisitthisak

Thanawat Numcharoen

Putsadee Sriamphunpluk

Pachara Piyasongsoot

Suparerk Nammontree

Akkarawin Arunmuang

Angkrit Ajchariyasophon

At the opening celebration, which took place 15 June, several staff members from the nearby Suphanburi College of Fine Arts were in attendance and spoke about the artworks in the context of the local culture. Also on hand was a hip hop group, featuring exuberant break dancing and music.

“A Monk, a Child, an Art, a Philosopher, a Weevil” is housed in the 1984 + 1 Gallery in Suphanburi, itself a former rice mill with over 4,000 square meters of presentation space. Visitors are welcome Tuesday through Sunday between the hours of 10:00 and 17:00. The exhibit will continue until 1st September.

The town of Suphanburi dates back to the 9th century and is rich in historical and cultural heritage. It was an important border town during the period of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, and as a result many significant battles were waged in the province. In addition to its many historical sites, Suphanburi offers natural attractions such as caves, waterfalls, bird parks and fish farms. The town is located 100 kilometers from Bangkok.
