Nissan and EGAT sign MoU on EV Charging Stations and Platform Co-Creation

Electric vehicles (EV) project positions Thailand as ASEAN leader
in sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem development

BANGKOK, Thailand (March 12, 2021) The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), together with Nissan Thailand and other leading car companies, today signed an MoU regarding EV Charging Stations and Platform Co-Creation to support the creation of a sustainable EV ecosystem in Thailand.

This collaboration further supports the adoption of a Thai EV ecosystem covering multiple areas. These include EV charging station development and installment, EV-related applications and platform co-creation, EV information network development plus the ability to create promotional activities together.

“Two key barriers for EV adoption is the fear of running out of power before finding a charging station, and concerns about limited public charging infrastructure. To benefit Thai consumers, Nissan is honored to join together with EGAT and other automobile partners and for today’s MoU, to use our electrification leadership to assist making a comprehensive EV ecosystem a reality for Thailand,” said Mr. Ramesh Narasimhan, President of Nissan Thailand.

A recent Frost & Sullivan’s study by Nissan showed that Thai consumers are leaders in ASEAN for electrified mobility demand, interest, and awareness. From the study, we have found that more charging stations were needed in residential areas, and concerns around public charging infrastructure were still barriers to making the switch to EVs. In line with this MoU, Nissan is aiming to support electrified mobility implementation to support it.

A key component is using the technology and decades of experience in EVs that has allowed Nissan’s 100% electric motor-driven vehicles (LEAF and all e-POWER vehicles) to reach more than one million unit sales worldwide in 2021,  to support Thailand’s mobility evolution.

“In this transitional period where consumers are looking for EV technology, the introduction of Nissan’s e-POWER technology, giving drivers an EV driving experience without needing to charge, is a very important technical bridge to support Thai customers towards EV adoption,” explained Narasimhan at the MoU signing event at Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse.

Nissan’s role started with the introduction of the Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass EV, to Thailand in 2018. The LEAF is a pillar of Nissan’s goals to reduce emissions and provide electric vehicle technologies that benefit the environment and society. Nissan globally has set the goal to achieve carbon neutrality across the company’s operations and the life cycle of its products.

In 2019 and 2020 Nissan Thailand subsequently invested in producing e-POWER technology at the company’s facilities in Samut Prakan, to ensure Thailand serves as a key global production and export hub for Nissan. And the regional leader in driving the company’s vision for the electrification of mobility.
