NT Telecom accelerates digital transformation on AWS Outposts

BANGKOK – May 31, 2021 – National Telecom Public Company Limited (NT Telecom) recently shared how the company collaborates with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create hybrid cloud workload solutions on AWS Outposts.

AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that offers the same AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any data center, co-location space, or on-premises facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Outposts is ideal for workloads that require low latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing, data residency, and migration of applications with local system interdependencies.

NT Telecom, which is a merged unit of state telecom enterprises TOT and CAT Telecom, was launched on January 7, 2021 with combined assets worth an estimated THB 300 billion. NT Telecom revenue figures totalled THB 155.38 billion during 2019.

During a recent Public Sector Online Summit, Dr Wongkot Vijacksungsithi, Executive Vice President of NT Telecom, said, “We are excited to launch a true hybrid cloud experience powered by AWS to our customers, building on the highly secure, reliable, and high performance of the AWS Cloud. Our mission is to enhance Thailand’s telecommunications and digital services for our customers, who benefit from the accelerated pace of innovation in the cloud, while also allowing for the save and secure storage and data processing of data on-site.”

NT Digital services includes cloud services, data centers, artificial intelligence, data solutions, big data, IoT, data exchange solutions, cyber security, fixed broadband services in addition to 3G, 4G, and 5G mobile services. To date it has more than two million subscribers.

First unveiled in November 2018, AWS Outposts allows customers to select from a range of computer storage and graphics-optimised Amazon EC2 instances, with or without local storage options, backed by Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume options. AWS Outposts is fully managed by AWS, small businesses can focus on their customers and driving innovation that differentiates their business, while leaving the responsibility of managing the infrastructure to AWS.

Ms Lee Chew Tan, Managing Director, ASEAN, Worldwide Public Sector, AWS, said that the public sector team is collaborating closely with a range of customers across the region. “Each public sector organization is unique and has their own mission to accomplish as they service their constituents. In ASEAN, a lot of public sector customers are moving to adopt cloud technology, allowing these public sector organizations or agencies to move fast and accelerate innovation.

“With AWS Outposts, organizations in Thailand with workloads that require hybrid cloud solution can benefit from low latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing, and local data storage. They will be able to automate governance processes, launch new e-services to the general public in real time, and use security features to keep customer data safe. With the ‘pay-as-you-go’ pricing model of the cloud model, they will be able to drive down total cost of ownership,” Ms Tan, added.

Other Thai government agencies that have adopted and utilized NT digital services includes the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society which uses open source public cloud technology plus the government data platform Government Data Center and Cloud Services (GDCC). The Ministry of Public Health has also adopted the use of HIE (Health Information Exchange) as part of their eHealth strategy alongside the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Industry and 22 other agencies in both the Thai public and private sectors.
