Cinema Documentary Retrospective and COMRADE COUTURE Film Photo Exhibition

with Filmtalks with German Director Marco Wilms

For the first time, 8 Cinema –Revolution- Documentaries of worldknown German director Marco Wilms are shown in Thailand. Screenings are followed by filmtalks with the director, and invited Thai artists and activists. Marco Wilms teaches at Chiang Mai University too.

The Program is also part of the 160th anniversary of Thai-German relations.

On 17.12.2022 at 8pm, PREVIEW Screening of ART WAR, multiple awarded documentary, at DREAM SPACE GALLERY CHIANG MAI during the printmaking festival. Followed by Q&A filmtalk.

ART WAR is the story of young, creative Egyptian Artists of the Arab Spring who, through the means of graffiti murals, rebellious music, art, and enlightenment, try to salvage their revolution from going under.

Marco Wilms: “In 2011 I set out to film a world revolution – the dawn of a new era. In 2013 it became a burning inferno. Martyrs of the revolution dominate our heroes’ graffiti. They salvage the spirit of the revolution, sailing on Pharaoh’s solar ship through the downfall of the Islamic world to the shores of a new life…”   

„In 2011, the images of the Egyptian uprising touched me very much. As an East German, they reminded me of my “own revolution” and the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989. So I went to Cairo to film the young revolutionary artists, who were like me 20 years ago. For the past 2 and a half years, I have filmed them fighting on the streets of Egypt…

The Retrospective Program opens on 6.1.2023 at 6pm with a VERNISSAGE of the film foto exhibition COMRADE COUTURE and a fashion show,

at Woofpack Gallery, Sala Daeng Bangkok.

Followed by the screening of the film COMRADE COUTURE on 7.1.2023 at 8pm, with Q&A with the director Marco Wilms, at Documentary Club, Sala Daeng Bangkok.

“Comrade Couture” is a journey into the wild parallel world of the fashionistas and Bohemians of East Berlin. It was a fantasy world within East Germany’s very restricted everyday life. Here you could break ranks, be individual and provocative. The most important identifying feature of the scene was the development of a personal style, because you couldn’t buy such a thing in GDR times. In this nether world, you had to create your individual image.

“Comrade Couture” is a humorous documentary about creativity as the elixir of life – and the never-ending longing for individual freedom.
