Artist’s statement:

Poverty and the low quality of life of the working class is a topic that has always interested me. I am a labourer myself and spend my free time making art.

This photographic work was created when I worked in agriculture and construction for a while. I saw the world of labour. It’s something I know, because it’s no different from life in the countryside or where I grew up. When you’re a kid, you might not be aware of the problems and you don’t question what’s going on. When you grow up with poverty issues, it becomes a normal part of life, even in adulthood as a labourer or farmer. Poverty is a problem, especially among the working class and those working in agriculture, that has been ingrained in Thai society for a long time. Workers remain a very low-income group that does not have adequate access to resources such as education, health care, housing, etc.

Employment opportunities are few and far between. All this has an impact not only on the family structure but also on society as a whole. Children falling out of the education system due to poverty, even though education is so necessary to climb the social ladder and escape poverty. Drug-addicted parents, orphaned children, grandparents who have to look after their children and grandchildren. You see all this every day, especially in rural areas. It is important to highlight and discuss these problems in order to improve the quality of life of workers and to show and enable a path out of poverty. Only in this way can the employee become the centre of a family structure and determine the direction and possibilities of the family himself. And what a gain that would be for society.
