Richard Koh Fine Art is pleased to present “Sereneness”, a solo exhibition by Thai artist Kanokpon Somchua from 19 October to 16 November 2024 at our Bangkok gallery. This exhibition showcases a new body of work that explores the profound connection between humans and nature, emphasising the tranquil beauty found in simplicity and observation.

In “Sereneness”, Somchua reflects on the harmony between the natural world and human life, highlighting how our environment influences emotions and perceptions. Drawing from personal experiences of solitude in nature, the artist translates these moments into minimalist visual expressions. Simplified forms of trees, branches, and natural elements evoke a sense of calm and mindfulness, mirroring the inner peace that arises from deep contemplation of the natural world.

Description automatically generated Kanokpon Somchua describes this series as a journey of self-discovery, where external landscapes inspire an inner transformation. Through careful observation of light, shadow, and organic forms, the works capture the serenity of nature while inviting viewers to pause and reflect on their own relationships with their surroundings. Somchua’s artistic process fosters a meditative space, providing respite from the chaos of modern life and encouraging a deeper appreciation of nature’s simplicity and significance.

The exhibition offers viewers a serene and reflective experience, underscoring the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of nurturing a positive relationship with the natural world.

Born on September 16, 1996, in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, KANOKPON SOMCHUA graduated with a master’s degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University.

Baan Ton Riang, in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, is where the artist was born and raised. It is where his life began, with the land, forest, mountains, sky, and sunlight shaping his being. These natural surroundings are not just material objects or resources to fulfill human needs but the source of life, nourishing all beings, including humans. They mold life and consciousness, shaping both the artist’s form and inner abstract thoughts.

This connection to nature prompted the artist to reflect and understand themselves through their birthplace’s environment. Their creative process involves practicing awareness and being conscious of the surroundings, recognizing their relationship with nature. By observing the external world as a model and reflecting on their inner emotions and feelings, they convey these insights into their art. The artist’s work captures the beauty found in the rhythms and branches of trees and forests, translating the stories, experiences, and emotional states inspired by nature into visual creations that explore the connection between themselves and their environment.
