Since the days of the renaissance, landscape paintings were created to convey messages regarding the outward facade of humanity, while also providing a foundational structure to the overall contents of a painting. landscape paintings would receive a boom in popularity during the industrial revolution, as many people sought out paintings of wondrous views for reasons beyond a display of status. to possess a landscape painting within one’s domicile symbolized the privilege to appreciate what can be found in abundance. mountains, trees, foliage, rivers, sunlight, or even wind, things that were once given freely became sought-after commodities in the form of art from that point on. works of art that portray scenery are accepted as a form of high art, not simply as illustrations of one’s surroundings, but for their introduction of the concept of interpreting the landscape, which would eventually become a key discipline in the world of art. even after centuries have passed, there are still lingering questions to be asked within the realm of landscape paintings, not unlike a world that is yet to be fully mapped.
The ‘geopoetics’ exhibition revolves around the subject of data transference between real-world events and empty spaces within works of art, as the physicality of landscapes are dissected for their significance in the form of metaphors in contemporary art. the universe and the human body have been meaningfully simulated in the form of scenery, with the artists featured in this exhibition acting as representatives that allow us to investigate the definition of landscape art from cultures and ancient knowledge, when humans used the characteristics of the landscape to explain various phenomena, beliefs, knowledge, politics, all the way to science, despite the fact that the art world still views these things through a specific ‘space’ in which various things are placed according to the language of mundane scenery.
