Head High Second Floor is pleased to present “You Will Be There” – a photo exhibition by Ohm Phanphiroj
Artist’s statement:
“You Will Be There” is a self-portrait series exploring issues of self, identity, sexuality, and gender role. I examine the relationship between the self and others in an intimate context, both privately and publicly, opening a dialog about race, gender, role play, seduction, longing, and acceptance.
By photographing and displaying myself nude,I confront my own insecurity and vulnerability, leading to a series of personal investigations and acceptance of the body and its power. Each image arises from how I view myself and the world.
Making these portraits is a personal experience, a journey into a complex layer where identity is seen, judged, but rarely discussed. It reveals my personal desire for an openness and a search to understand not only who and what I am, but how the world understands me, regards me, and judges me.
This project is not only a personal response to a desire to understand myself, but also represents a greater, universal search for a place of belonging.
Artist Biography:
Ohm Phanphiroj is an internationally recognized intermedia artist and educator whose artistic endeavors delve into a wide array of themes. Throughout his career, Ohm has dedicated himself to unraveling the intricacies of human behavior, particularly in the realms of nonverbal communication, sociology, anthropology, and psychology.
As a queer artist and a member of a minority group, Ohm’s work stands as an alternative perspective to mainstream narratives, sparking discussions on cultural and subcultural identity. Within his artistic exploration, Ohm delves into themes such as privacy, intimacy, gender, sexuality, love, desire, and secrets.
Employing photography and film as his primary mediums, Ohm serves as both a visual architect and storyteller, capturing significant moments and crafting compelling narratives that often go untold. He is deeply interested in the power of recorded imagery to influence, inform, provoke, and shape human understanding and perception of society, culture, and interpersonal relationships.
Ohm’s impact extends globally through his numerous exhibitions and publications, including 18 books, 7 of which are solo projects. Presently, he holds the position of senior lecturer in film and photography at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica. Additionally, Ohm is actively engaged in the creation of his upcoming books, “You Will Be There” and “Romanticizing Landscape.”
